Dr Pujan Parikh, consultant pulmonary medicine and sleep medicine expert, HN Reliance Hospital, says, “Asthma attacks can be triggered by inflammation and constriction as heat and humidity can block the airways. Asthma attacks can even occur when your airways get all inflamed and tight, making it tough to breathe. Heat and humidity increases air pollutants which can cause ozone and other air pollutants to be more concentrated, which can worsen asthma symptoms.”

High humidity levels can even encourage the growth of dust mites and mold, both of which can aggravate asthma symptoms.

“All things considered, heat and humidity can exacerbate asthma symptoms by irritating the respiratory tract, increasing the chance of coming into contact with triggers such allergens and air pollution, and promoting difficult breathing,” adds Dr Parikh.

High temperatures can cause dehydration, leading to thicker mucus production in the airways. This thicker mucus can obstruct airflow and exacerbate breathing difficulties in asthma patients. Additionally, humidity can affect respiratory function, making it more challenging for individuals with asthma to regulate their breathing effectively.

Some individuals may experience heat-related asthma, where exposure to hot and humid conditions directly triggers asthma symptoms. This can occur due to thermal stress on the airways or the inhalation of warm, moist air that may contain irritants or allergens.
